Penny

Name: Penny

Date of Passing: 04/05/2025

Message to Penny: Oh, Penny. We loved you so much. You were weird, funny, independent, and so damn beautiful. You turned me into a shameless “cat dad” and I’m better off for it. You had so many little idiosyncrasies and we always considered you our “special” girl. I hope that when you get back to the mothership to report on your findings from earth, you tell them all about the importance of cryotherapy (sitting in the open fridge and refusing to budge until the door alarm goes off), about stealing my spot on the couch to lay closer to mom, about how to corral us around the house for pets, strategically ending at the back door and crying to sit outside for awhile, about how much you loved sleeping in the window hammock and watching the squirrels. Maybe you’ll mention your disapproval of exposed hairy legs (for which we called you “little nun”) or your penchant for dragging yourself around on the underside of the couch (for which we called you “mechanic”). When I take a bath, I'll still be expecting for you to strut in and whine from atop the toilet until I get out to give you pets. We buried you with a crown of flowers and you looked angelic. I hope that you’re having the sweetest dreams, and that you know you are missed immensely (yes, even by Ralph). We’ll be thinking about you always and we hope that you like the garden we have planned in your memory. Until we meet again, sweet girl.

Tell us about Penny: She was the most beautiful and vivacious cat in the room at Wright Way Rescue, where we stopped in just to "have a look" before leaving with a new member of the family. When she acted out we'd call her "Artemis," her shelter name, also apt considering her proclivity for catching flies and other pests. We decided on Penny (originally short for Penelope, though we never called her that) because we felt it matched her good looks and copper accents. If she could sit outside all day (on her leash or in her tent) she would. When it was too cold to go outside she'd settle for sitting in a sunbeam, starting out the window or licking the condensation off the glass. The neighbors loved seeing her fuzzy little head popping up over our nearly full-length windows, patrolling the neighborhood. She was such a good, easy cat—we said it a million times when she was here, and we'll say it a million more as we recall fond memories of her.
