our brave little girl,
we named you Millie —
short for Military —
but your battles were always gentle ones.
You fought for sunbeams.

Our mommy kitty —
the one who woke us at dawn
with determined little meows and purrs,
as if to say,
“Up now. Love is waiting.”
You tucked us in at night,
curled close to our stomachs,
kneading the world into something safe.
You loved pets.

You loved the golden light of afternoon sun
warming your whiskers
like a medal you quietly earned.
Our Jazz kitty,
who came at the first piano note —
as if the music called your name.
Sofia would play
melodies of new and old,
and there you were,
curling beside your furry pillow,
listening as though the keys
were telling your story.

Tell us about Millie: We had been looking for a cat for quite some time, and I saw one I liked on a rescue's website. He was a big, gray young boy, and we were determined to meet him. When we arrived and looked for him, the rescue said he was already taken. We were disappointed, but we went to look around the rescue and saw Millie!
She was very shy and went to her cage to hide. We followed her, and Sofia heard her purr. It was the first time Sofia heard a cat purr! We were so smitten by her! She was the perfect match for our family! I know we couldn't handle a boisterous, playful cat, and Millie was a laid-back, sweet, and oh so loving girl. We miss her terribly.
