Baxter

Name: Baxter

Message to Baxter: Seven years ago, Baxter came into our lives after what we believe had been a very hard first chapter. Before us, he had spent much of his life chained up and living on concrete. When he came home with us, we decided those years were over. From that day forward, Baxter was officially retired. And what a retirement he had. He discovered soft beds, warm blankets, car rides, patio time, treats, naps wherever he pleased, and the deep joy of being completely and unapologetically spoiled. He gave us his whole heart, his goofy smile, his soulful eyes, his stubborn little opinions, and a love that filled every corner of our home. Baxter was more than a pet. He was family. He was our sweet boy, our shadow, our comfort, our comic relief, and one of the greatest loves of our lives. He had a way of making ordinary days feel better just by being in the room. On April 9, 2026, we had to say goodbye to him. It was one of the hardest things we have ever had to do. But we are so grateful that his final years were filled with safety, softness, love, and peace. He deserved all of that and more. Baxter, thank you for trusting us. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for letting us be your retirement home, your people, and your family. We miss you more than words can say, and we will carry you with us always. Rest easy, sweet Baxter. You are still so deeply loved.

Tell us about Baxter: Baxter’s story began with a Facebook post. Someone had shared a video of a brindle dog running around the fenced yard at the shelter. He had already been there for three months, and the post was their final plea for him. If no one came for him, he was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. As soon as Paul and I saw him, we knew. There was no debate, no “let’s think about it,” no practical decision-making like responsible adults supposedly do. Baxter was coming home with us. At the time, his name was Midnight. That was the name written on a note left by his previous owner, who had tied him to the flag pole outside the dog pound and left him there. From what we understand, his first years had been hard. He had spent much of his life chained up and living on concrete. But that was not going to be the rest of his story. When he came home with us, we gave him a new name: Baxter. Partly because one of my favorite shows was "Last Man Standing", and the family’s last name was Baxter and Baxter's are bad-asses. So our boy earned the name. He went from being forgotten and left behind to being loved, spoiled, protected, and cherished every single day. Baxter gave us seven beautiful years, his quiet loyalty, and the kind of love that changes a home forever. We wish we had known him for his whole life. But we are so grateful we got to give him the second half he deserved. Baxter Jones, formerly Midnight, rescued bad-ass, retired gentleman, professional napper, and deeply loved member of our family. You were never unwanted again. You were ours. And we were yours.
