Message to Carlie: Love is Carlie
We met at a time when we desperately needed each other. You were an abandoned 11 year old senior, picked up on the streets of Hammond, Indiana alone, afraid, and terrified. Brought to Paws Shelter, you were not claimed or wanted.
We had just lost our Beloved Charlie, (after whom you were subsequently renamed) after 17 years of love and devotion. Charlie’s sister, Maggie, who spent virtually her entire life side by our side….waking, sleeping, eating, training, and, yes, shopping ….was devastated at the loss. We knew all of us needed someone to fill the emptiness in our hearts.
On the 24 th of August, 2022, Phylle, Maggie, and I made an appointment to see “Gwendolyn” at Paws. Love at first sight and with Maggie’s approval Gwendolyn, aka Carlie, joined us for what would be a wonderful four years.
Carlie was amazingly resilient in so many adversities that she suffered. Losing all but one tooth in oral surgery due to years of dental neglect and poor feeding, she adapted and handled the handicap without complaint. In fact, until the end, she earned A+ for eating and pill consumption.
We actually feel blessed that you were still with us when in the spring of 2025, you had a horribly painful experience that caused you to lose your right eyesight. Your pain and reaction seemed as though you had a stroke and would endure terrible suffering. However, once again you bounced back because that’s who you were. Months of uncomfortable eye drops prevented further damage that might have resulted in surgically removing the eye. You took the painful drops like a trooper and even allowed your dog sitter to administer them for the two weeks we were visiting our great granddaughter, Emma, in Japan.
Carlie was the poster puppy for ultimate sweetness. She literally did not have a mean bone in her entire body. She loved to be hugged and sung to. She slept on our bed with Maggie until her legs started to become weak in her last couple of years and we feared she would attempt to get off and injure herself.
In her 16 th year, she began to lose weight despite a constantly hearty appetite. Her back legs were getting weaker and her spine misformed due to her arthritis. Doggie dementia followed and zooming in small circles, having accidents resulting in the need for doggie diapers, bumping into and getting trapped in furniture, and not having any decent quality of life anymore forced us to make that heart-breaking decision that all true dog lovers suffer with. It was time to say sleep well in peace….thank you for your sweet, unwavering love and dedication, and finally feel free of the pain and confusion. We will love you and remember you in our hearts forever sweet Carlie.
