Message to Bear: Dear Bear,
You became a part of our lives before we were even a family. Three apartments, a move to the suburbs, an engagement, a wedding, three boys, and a whole life built together. For almost 13 years, you were a constant. You were there when we became a family. The reality is, you helped make us one.
You were vocal about everything. You loved fetch, long walks, the beach, and keeping tabs on your people. If one of us got too far ahead on a walk, you barked like crazy until we fell back. We were a pack, and you liked to keep it that way. You loved to cuddle, but only when you decided it was time. You were fiercely loyal, protective, stubborn, and incredibly sweet.
Over the last year, I tried to prepare myself for this day. I read books about pet loss to the boys. We talked about what it would mean. We took extra walks, gave extra treats, and spent extra time together. I knew it was coming.
But I have learned that knowing something is coming and being ready for it are two very different things.
No amount of preparation could have prepared me for how much I would miss you. The quiet feels different. The house feels different. Everything feels a little different. The boys keep reminding me that you are not really gone. They tell me that you are attached to all of us by your invisible leash and always will be. I know that is true.
Thank you for growing up with us. Thank you for being there through every chapter. Thank you for loving us so fiercely.
You were my first baby, and I will miss you for the rest of my life. Forever my Bear. Bear Cohen
